Level of Difficulty If your choice for accommodation in the desert is the fixed camp, you will find the luxuries of running water, a toilet and a bed to sleep in. However, even those not used to camping will probably find desert camping in our portable igloo tents a relatively easy experience. It is hot during the day but the atmosphere and environment are dry and clean. Our guides and drivers are also very experienced with desert conditions and on-hand to help when required. The worst you can expect is a sandy wind but the sand is fine and shakes off easily. Your guides will arrange the preparation and cooking of meals, tents and mattresses are provided. And your bathroom? Clean and fresh every morning, nestled behind the privacy of a dune with the best view in the world! Water Contrary to what you may think, water shortages are not a problem as drivers stop regularly at wells to restock on water supplies for washing and cooking. Abundant bottled drinking water is provided but often the well water is potable too. It’s recommended you hold onto empty water bottles to fill up at the wells so you have a personal supply of washing water. The wells are also an opportunity to wash clothes which dry very quickly. Clothing For protection from the sun, light and long-sleeved items are a good idea. From October to March, night-time temperatures can be cool to cold so at least one jacket or item of warm clothing is necessary. A comfortable pair of walking shoes is recommended, as well as a lighter pair of open shoes or sandals for walking on the sand. What to Bring All of the following items can be found in shops and supermarkets in Tripoli but it is recommended you arrive in the country prepared as there may not be time to shop around before heading into the desert. - Sleeping bag (if camping in portable igloo tents) - Towel - Toilet paper - Wet Ones - Torch and spare batteries - Batteries for digital cameras - Hat and sunglasses - Sunscreen and lip balm - Soap for clothes washing - Umbrella/Parasol if you’re sensitive to the sun Generally, try to keep luggage to a minimum for desert trips. You will be able to leave un-needed items at the hotel in Tripoli so consider bringing a separate bag or suitcase.
